What is 3D SCANNING?

3D scanning captures your physical part as a digital mesh (OBJ/STL). It’s great for visualisation, reference, or future-proofing an existing part so you have a record if it ever breaks. A raw scan isn’t editable CAD it won’t have features like holes/threads/fillets, and may include minor noise or gaps.

Who this is for

Limitations & prep

Highly reflective, black, or transparent parts may require a temporary scanning spray. Please send items clean and dry; we’ll return them in their original condition after scanning. Note: internal cavities that aren’t in line of sight may be unscannable without disassembly.

What to send us:

Just send the part (drop-off, courier, or mail-in) and tell us what it’s for—so we understand the part’s role and what to prioritise.

Typical timelines:

Scan-only meshes are delivered from 48 hours for small/simple parts. Scan + Reverse-Engineering to STEP/IGES runs from 48 hours up to 5 business days.

I uploaded a file for an instant quote, which was followed up by Max via email. He was super helpful and made a real effort to check in and clarify how I wanted my model printed to make sure everything was correct. Really friendly people and the whole thing was done and ready to collect the same day.

I have a customer in Australia who needed a small part printed. I live in the USA so it would have been really hard to ship such a small part making sure it wasn't lost in shipping. Kad 3D was able to print and ship the part for me which saved a ton of time for my customer. They are able to finish their build in days as opposed to the weeks it would take for a new shipment to arrive. Thank you so much!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a questions in mind?
What is 3D scanning and when should I use it?
3D scanning captures your physical part as a detailed digital 3D model. It’s great for: replacing an unavailable part, checking fit, keeping a digital record, or starting a redesign. If you need an editable CAD model for manufacturing, we usually combine scanning with reverse engineering (see Q2).
“Scan-only” vs “Scan + Reverse Engineering”—what’s the difference?
  • Scan-only: You receive a cleaned mesh file (e.g. STL/OBJ/PLY) that’s perfect for visualisation, reference, or 3D printing “as is”. Meshes are not parametric CAD (no editable features like holes/fillets).
  • Scan + Reverse Engineering: We rebuild the part as editable CAD (STEP/IGES) from the scan so it’s ready for 3D printing, machining, or moulding. This is what most clients choose for production.
How accurate is the scan and what details can you capture?

Accuracy depends on the part size, geometry and surface finish. For most jobs we aim for ~0.1–0.3 mm point accuracy with fine feature capture where the scanner has a clear line-of-sight. Tight fits are validated during the CAD stage and with test prints when needed.

Are there parts that are hard to scan? (glossy/black/clear surfaces, internal areas)

Yes—glossy, black or transparent parts can confuse scanners. We may apply a temporary matte scanning spray that wipes off after scanning. Deep holes, shiny cavities and hidden internal features are difficult because scanners need line-of-sight; these may require disassembly or measurement during the CAD stage.

What files will I get (STL/OBJ)—and what do they mean?

You can choose STL, OBJ or PLY.

  • STL: widely used for 3D printing; stores shape only.
  • OBJ: can include a texture map (useful if you need colour).
What’s the process and typical turnaround?
  1. Brief & photos (or send/drop off the part).
  2. 2) Quote & timeline.
  3. 3) Scan & clean-up (align, remove noise, set scale/units).
  4. 4) Deliver files (mesh only) or rebuild as CAD if selected. Small jobs often complete in a few days; complex assemblies take longer.
  5.
How do I prepare and send my part for scanning?

Wipe the part clean and dry. If it’s reflective/black/clear, don’t worry—we’ll handle temporary spray. Pack it safely (bubble wrap, no loose movement). Include any mating parts or dimensions that matter for fit. We return parts in their original state.

Where are you based and do you work Australia-wide?

We’re in Melbourne (781 High Street, Reservoir). You can drop off locally or ship the part to us. We serve clients across Australia and return ship via AusPost/courier; same-day courier is available across metro Melbourne.

How is 3D scanning priced?

Pricing depends on part size, surface finish, detail level and whether you want scan-only or scan + reverse engineering. Share photos with a ruler in frame and tell us what you need the files for; we’ll provide a clear, itemised quote and timeline.

Can you also make parts after scanning—and is my IP safe?

Yes. After scanning (and CAD if needed), we can 3D print fast or arrange short-run manufacturing. Your files are handled confidentially; we regularly work under NDAs and can sign yours or provide ours.

Need your prototype fast? Upload your file today.
