Maraging Steel 18Ni300 — SLM 3D printing

SLM Available Express available

Ultra-high-strength tool steel — hardens after ageing with low distortion.

Maraging Steel 18Ni300 3D printing material

18Ni300 maraging steel (EOS MS1) is a high-strength tooling steel printed by laser powder-bed fusion. It prints tough and machinable, then a simple ageing treatment takes it to roughly 2000 MPa and ~54 HRC with minimal distortion — ideal for tooling, inserts and high-load parts.

What Maraging Steel 18Ni300 is used for

Maraging tool steel is used for high-strength tooling — injection-mould inserts with conformal cooling, dies and jigs — where hardness and dimensional stability under load are critical.

Strengths

  • Ultra-high strength — around 2000 MPa after ageing
  • Simple ageing treatment with low distortion
  • Machinable in the as-built state before ageing
  • Excellent for injection-mould inserts and high-load tooling

Know the limits

  • Not corrosion-resistant — protect or coat for wet service
  • Metal pricing and lead times
  • Requires post-build ageing to reach full strength

Maximum build size

1100 × 625 × 625 mm

Surface finish & colours

Raw metallic as-built; machine before ageing, then polish critical faces. Not corrosion-resistant — protect for wet service.

Natural metal finish; machine and polish.

Finishing & post-processing for Maraging Steel 18Ni300

Parts printed in Maraging Steel 18Ni300 in SLM can be finished a number of ways at KAD3D, from a clean functional surface to a fully painted, display-ready result. The treatments below are the ones we most often apply to this material.

Heat Treatment
A furnace cycle develops the material’s full mechanical properties — essential for metals to reach their rated strength.
Machining
CNC machining or drilling adds precision features — flat mating faces, bores and tapped holes — to tolerances tighter than printing alone.
Polishing
Progressive polishing brings the surface up to a bright, reflective sheen — most striking on metals and clear resins.

What this material supports

✓ Paintable
  • Paint & custom colour: Maraging Steel 18Ni300 primes and paints well, so parts can be matched to any brand colour, gloss level or metallic look.

Most popular finish: Machine in the as-built state, then age-harden to reach ~2000 MPa and ~54 HRC.

Reference #3DBenchy — like-for-like pricing

To make material costs easy to compare, KAD3D prints the same standard model — the #3DBenchy — in every material. The price shown is what that identical benchmark part costs in Maraging Steel 18Ni300, so you can weigh materials against each other on a genuine like-for-like basis before uploading your own file.
