PLA 3D printing material

PLA is the go-to for concept models, form-and-fit checks and indoor jigs. It prints fast, holds sharp detail and comes in the widest colour range of any FDM material. It softens from around 55 °C and is brittle under impact, so it is a prototyping and display material rather than an end-use one.

What PLA is used for

PLA is the everyday workhorse of desktop 3D printing. It is most used for concept models, visual prototypes, architectural models, tabletop miniatures, cosplay props and classroom pieces — the kind of models you see at maker fairs and design studios.

Finishing & post-processing for PLA

Parts printed in PLA in FDM can be finished a number of ways at KAD3D, from a clean functional surface to a fully painted, display-ready result. The treatments below are the ones we most often apply to this material.

Sanding
Hand or machine sanding knocks back layer lines and blemishes, stepping up through grits toward a smooth, even surface ready for paint or display.
Painting / Priming
Primer fills the last micro-texture so colour coats lie down evenly; the part can then be finished in any custom colour, gloss level or brand match.
Annealing
A controlled heat cycle relaxes internal stress and boosts heat resistance and strength, at the cost of a little dimensional shift. Recommended: 50–60 °C for 6–12 h (Bambu Lab filament guide).

  • Sanding & smoothing: responds well to sanding, so layer lines can be worked back to a smooth, paint-ready surface.
  • Threaded inserts: heat-set or press-fit brass inserts can be installed for durable, re-usable metal threads for fasteners.
